2024 Sardine Run Tours June July 2024

Scottburgh Sardine Netting 2018                    Sardine Net Scottburgh 2018

Sardine Run...What's it all about

As usual we will be doing guided fishing and photographic tours for the period of the Sardine Run this year. June July maybe August. As most of you know this event is unpredictable as far as timing is concerned and also logistically can be very challenging! Putting those attributes aside this exhilarating event is one not to miss!

As April progressed and the offshore winds start to blow along the East Coast and the water colour turns greener and colder the word on everyone's lips is Sardines. The whole Sardine experience is mind blowing. To be out on a flat calm Ocean and all of a sudden the water explodes with Fish, Sharks, Dolphins, and Whales is something words cannot describe

Dates

Our schedule is flexible and based on the migration and showings of the sardines. Through our network of resources we are able to get up to date information on the whereabouts of the Sardines. The most popular time is the end of June and the beginning of July, even as late as August.

What will I need?

We will provide you with a full list of what you will need to bring along. You will of course need your Jetski, valid safety equipment, skippers ticket, and fishing licence. You will definitely need cameras and videos! We also offer land based viewings where you will see netting of the Sardines. We have a huge network of Sardine Spotters to assist in our search for Sardines. We also arrange Scuba Diving Tours.

What fish can you expect to catch?

The game fish that follow the Sardine Shoals are Snoek, (Queen Mackerel) Couta (King Mackerel) Bonito, Yellowfin Tuna, Sail Fish.

Photographic and video opportunities

We will be up close and personal with the Gannets, where you would be forgiven for thinking you should be wearing a crash helmet as they repeatedly drop from the air with exacting precision to eat their little silver prey. Whales, Dolphins, and Sharks will be very close. We will keep a safe distance and we will not interfere or go too close to the Whales.

More Sardine Run Information

Where do the Sardines appear

On their journey up the South African East Coast the Sardines will pass through the Transkei where we will go and meet them. Alternatively we will meet them somewhere as they enter the Durban Natal South Coast. Popular spots are Port Edward, Ramsgate, Margate, Shelly Beach, Hibberdene, Pumula, Rocky Bay, Scottburgh, Umkomaas, Umgababa, Amanzimtoti and Durban. Any of these places are easily accessible from our base in Umkomaas

A Wonderful Gift. The Knowledge of Catching Fish!

Abi fighting another Monster Fish in Mozambique

A Wonderful Gift. The Knowledge of Catching Fish!

Who can ever forget the first time they caught a fish? I certainly will never forget that’s for sure. Don’t get me wrong the fish was tiny and it fit into a small partition in a plastic Tackle Box but who cares it was mine. I caught it and I was very proud. That incredible experience felt like yesterday I can still smell the damp air after the rains. I can still see that little fish come flying out of the murky water and into my very grateful hands. Wow there must be more. I must come here again. Maybe every day. Maybe just maybe I could get pretty good at this fishing game! That day took over my life. I was hooked. I didn’t care what type of fishing I did I just needed to Fish. Fast forward many moons later I found myself firstly Kayak Fishing and then in 2009 Jetski Fishing. I have caught some incredible fish and still continue to enjoy catching Fish. However, my satisfaction in Fishing has somewhat shifted to enjoying teaching people to Fish and seeing them catch Fish. Again, the size doesn’t matter it’s the whole experience of catching Fish that counts. I’m writing this article in early 2024 and to be honest for most people it hasn’t been a great few years for many reasons and there’s a million reasons why we cant go Fishing. Fuel prices, vessel costs, weather etc. etc. Many people have left the pleasure Fishing industry citing the afore mentioned reasons why. I understand that and it’s very sad news. On the brighter side I have seen an upturn in youngsters starting to get involved in Fishing both fresh water and salt water and they have been catching some great Fish and you can see these guys and girls are having an incredible time. In my opinion the sport of angling is on a downward slope and we need to turn it around. Anyone who has taken a friend or a youngster Fishing and took the time to help them I applaud you. Lets give them hunger and incredible experience you have for Fishing.

Luke bending properly!

Kirk & Brendan from Go Fish Magazine have always been great supporters of helping Junior Anglers. Byron Kane is incredibly good at coaching his son Brayden & Daughter Rhori to Fish. In fact now they are too good! Mike Perriera from The Kingfisher and Adam Kamdar from Township Hyper also go above and beyond to help Juniors and support the growth of Angling. Many Skiboat Clubs have initiatives for Juniors and I’m sure there’s many more initiatives out there. Let me know Who and what initiatives!

So what’s the secret? Well, its quite simple take a friend or a Junior Fishing and let them and try it. If they don’t like it try again but don’t force them. Here are a few pointers I have thought about.

Shaun & Brother Ricky who is enjoying his first Jetski outing. I can read Shaun’s thoughts Ohhh here we go. Ricky is now looking for his own Jetski!

The Venue Maybe it’s not a good idea to take a junior angler through a huge shore break launch site and out into a choppy Ocean the first few launches. Try Fishing on a local river or dam or a flat calm Ocean. Be patient and its ok to not catch Fish. They are there for the total experience. Maybe think about a slightly later launch if they are not early risers.

ClothingA very important consideration is the correct clothing and expect the weather to change and plan extra clothing.

Food & Water Take plenty of Food, Water and Snacks for your Fishing session. No alcohol.

Rods & Tackle Make sure you take some relevant size Rods & tackle so the Junior Angler feels comfortable and the gear isn’t too heavy.

Target Species & Tactics Instead of Trolling Baits or Hard Body Lures or Konas a great way to enjoy Fishing and catch lots of Fish is to use Drop Shot, Bucktails, or Small Slow Pitch Jigs. It’s a great way to Fish relaxed and keep talking the beginner through what to do and what to try. Nothing beats the thrill of Jigging up a Lure and suddenly it stops dead and some Sea Creature heads back down to his home! Your Reel can be emptied in seconds so at least they will have a good story to tell.

Fish Make sure you practice catch and release with some species and explain size limitations but don’t over complicate things. Fishing should be fun shouldn’t it?

Timing Make sure you don’t go Fishing all day and make it turn boring. New Anglers need to stay interested and want more don’t we?

Safety It goes without saying that Fishing and especially on the Ocean can be dangerous and Safety is of paramount importance.  Make sure Life Jackets are warn and all safety equipment is working and up to date.

Anru & Ruan enjoy a good days Fishing in Guinjata Bay Mozambique

Come on guys and girls take a youngster or a friend Fishing………Let’s get them hooked!

Choosing A Jetski Fish Finder

Lowrance HDS7 Live jetski fish finder gps

HISTORY of Jetski Fish Finders.

Firstly when I say Fish Finder I actually mean Fish Finder / Sonar GPS Chart Plotter, or whatever you may call your particular Marine Electronics device. A "Fish Finder" as we will call it from now is probably not on the list of a "Must Haves" when you first purchase your Jetski or at least you are probably thinking that you have to purchase the lowest cost you can get away with as it probably will not make much difference anyway. You could not be further from the truth! From my own personal experience once you have a fish finder and it is taken away it will be like driving a car down a dark road with no lights. Yes its that important to me. Actually more important to me is the Chart Plotter as you can always ask a mate to supply you some GPS marks. The different types of fish you target may demand a better quality, or different type of fish finder, but more of that later.

CHOICES

When purchasing a new Fish Finder beyond 2024 these are a few of the questions to ask yourself......

Screen size. Is it important? Yes it definitely is important. The bigger the better, however a 7 inch is perfect. A 5 inch unit was OK until the new landscape format units came out and now 7 inch is the one to go for as long as your budget allows. A few guys have fitted 9 inch units and they are amazing, however you must reinforce the mounting point on your Jetski.

Do you need a Map Card? Units now come with a basic GPS to get you to your favourite fishing spot and back again. For some people that's OK. The benefit of course is that you do not have a door to open to access a memory card which could take in water. We do of course have a Fish Finder Cover to solve that issue Check them out here..... Flexible Covers If you do choose not to have a Map Card to be honest you would be missing out on so much! No transferring of Waypoints quickly. No back up of your Waypoints & Trails. No Map detail like 1 ft contours. NO area maps to find reefs and drop offs quickly.

Should I buy a Map Card...Yes that's my answer. Its like buying a TV with no programs and making your own content. No thanks I want to fish! The newer cards now have 1ft contours that gives you incredible reef details so you can do more fishing. Give me a shout if you want to know more about Map Cards.

Which Transducer will you use as they are not compatible with all units. Please contact me for further advice on Transducers whatsap Mick 072 938 1769 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Where will you mount the unit? Gone are the days where you could bolt your Head Unit onto the front hood. It just doesn't work and your unit will not last for very long due to the vibration and bouncing about. We make Custom Mounts from Stainless Steel and also supply RAM mounts

Lowrance offer a range of three choices of Fish Finders. Firstly the 2020 HOOK2 range HOOK2 RANGE which is now only available in a 4 inch version and to be honest I would not recommend it for a Jetski at all! For the budget conscious buyers and anyone who just wants the basics and would rather be fishing than playing with electronics I would recommend the New 2020 Hook Reveal range especially the 7 inch version. The second range is the Elite TI range ELITE TI2 RANGE which is an in between range and perfect for a Jetski however Lowrance have stopped making a 5 inch unit in that range. And finally the creme de la creme of Fish Finders the HDS Live range. HDS LIVE RANGE That's what I have and if its affordable to you I would suggest you get a 7 inch HDS Live. The display is amazing bright and clear. Two card slots which is invaluable if you want to map with your unit.

INSTALLATION

There are basically two ways to mount a Transducer onto a Jetski. Internally and externally. Prior to 2014 the installation of choice was to mount an Airmar P79 inside the hull. This type of transducer is filled with antifreeze or light oil and worked extremely well if fitted correctly! The benefit of fitting an in hull transducer is that when beaching and trailering / de trailering the transducer is protected. The downside is that you need to fit an external temperature transmitter. With the arrival of HDI and Chirp technology it has become essential to mount your Transducer externally. 2019 seen the arrival of Side Scan and huge Transducers which now gives us the capability of 120 metres side view from your vessel. In reality I have found that 30 to 40 metres side view in the Ocean is perfect on a very calm day! These new Transducers are definitely a challenge on a Jetski as beaching and de trailering can be a problem, so great care must be taken. I would definitely say use a Beach roller. In my opinion however the benefits outweigh the negatives.

If you need advice please contact us Cell / Whatsap Mick 072 938 1769 email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

TRANSDUCERS

If you would like the best Transducer for normal Broadband Sonar you cant beat a TM150 External Transducer. If you want Side Scan go for a Lowrance 3 in 1 Transducer but be warned they are huge! Here are some of the Transducers available. Transducers If you do not see yours listed or need help just contact me. Mick.

MOUNTING THE HEAD UNITS

Mounting the Head Unit of your Fish Finder can be a challenge on your Jetski so we either use a custom made mounting or a Ram Mounting. We also supply Flexible Covers for all units to protect your Fish Finder in the surf zone and rough weather.

Remember as you add Marine Electronics, Pumps etc. it is extremely important that you add a Dual Battery setup to your Jetski. Here is the Jetski Dual Battery parts Link to Dual Battery Kits If you would like installation help or us to fit your Dual Battery give me a shout. Mick.

Great idea for future Jetski Skippers !!!!!

I live in Umkomaas on the Durban South Coast. Umkomaas is the launch site to Aliwal Shoal which is a premier game fishing destination. I can now offer you the opportunity to do your skippers course and maybe a little fishing !! The idea is that in order to do your skippers course you must do 12 launches (over 4 days..3 Launches per day minimum) with a qualified skipper (me) and then 25 sea hours (again with me) you then do your theory test in the classroom with your examiner, and then we do your practical exam down at the Umkomaas launch site. Your manuals to do your theory part are posted to you a few weeks before you arrive if required (after deposit is paid). Although you only have to do 12 launches we can do as many as you and I feel that is required. You can do surf endorsement, sheltered launch, or upgrade your current skippers ticket. Accommodation can be arranged by me if required at a local Guest House or Self Catering establishment.

I can also help you choose a new Jetski or fishing tackle & equipment. Check out the Jetski Fishing Shop HERE

PLEASE NOTE THE REGULATIONS HAVE CHANGED IF YOU DO YOUR SKIPPERS COURSE ON A JETSKI YOU CANNOT SKIPPER A SKIBOAT WITH 2 ENGINES UNTIL YOU UPGRADE YOUR SKIPPERS TICKET

If you need to know something please feel free to contact Mick Clarke (codfather) Cell 072 938 1769 email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Jetski Buoyancy Certificate

Jetski Tubbys Buoyancy Certificate UPDATED 2019

From 2017 You now require a separate Buoyancy Certificate for your Tubbys, Jetwings, Pontoons, Side Pods, etc. and endorsed by SAMSA. The Tubby manufacturer must show SAMSA that if flooded the vessel will not sink, and the Tubbys / Jetwings / Pods etc. are also capable of being flooded. One of the options a manufacturer has is to do a Jetski 'Drop Test' This requires that a Jetski (not yours!) just a similar one must be dropped into sea water from a height of 2 metres. I witnessed one of these tests with Monty who manufactured the Jetwings. It is not for the faint hearted! Anyway you just need to contact the manufacturer for a copy of the certificate and attach it to your original buoyancy certificate.

In South Africa a Buoyancy Certificate is required for your Jetski before you can pass a COF (Certificate Of Fitness). Manufacturers issue a vessel wide Buoyancy Certificate when the vessel is new which is applicable to all models however your unique HIN (Hull Identification Number) is printed or written onto the buoyancy certificate. Contact us if you have lost or require a new Buoyancy Certificate and we will obtain one for you. Some are charged most there is no charge Yamaha and Sea doo are available. NOTE If you have any alterations do to your Jetski which affects the integrity of the hull you may need an Independant SAMSA appointed surveyor to issue a new Buoyancy Certificate. UPDATE There was a SAMSA (South African Marine Safety Association) Marine Notice (MN18 of 2015) which now means that if you fit Tubbys, Jetwings, Fast Pods, Pontoons etc. You will need the manufacturers approval (ie Yamaha or Sea doo etc) and the Pod manufacturer ie Racetech, Jetwings, Fast Power Sports, Hooked Up Motorsports. The Marine Notice was issued in late 2015 causing confusion and immediate cancellation of SAMSA appointed agents issuing buoyancy certificates. HOWEVER common sense prevailed as December is the busiest time of the year to issue certificates and the examiners are issuing COFs with the old original buoyancy certificate until further notice. All notices can be viewed here SAMSA Marine Notices
